When you want a new TV then there is some new technology on the market you really need to consider, and the sizes are still increasing too, both those things can make it really hard to choose your next model. Thankfully the fight between LCD and plasma is pretty much over, the plasma TV is a dying breed now, so that makes your decision a bit easier. There are still a few plasmas on the market which are trying to grab your money, but the LCD is firmly in control now so think long and hard before you go against the trend.
Below are the 2 main considerations you need to make when you go TV shopping now:
3D TV is starting to emerge: That’s right, 3D televisions are already on the market, and more will surely come flooding out now that others have made the tentative first steps, but are they any good? Well the main problem with a 3D capable TV is obviously the glasses, the current generation use ‘active shutter’ glasses which means each lens opens and shuts faster than our eye can notice, in order to show each eye a different image. I think they are cumbersome, and wearing glasses ruins the experience, I wouldn’t mind wearing them to watch the odd 3D film, but watching normal TV in them? No thanks.
So I think it is best to wait for a few years before you get your first 3D TV, that way we can wait for the technology to move forward and see if they find a way to get rid of the glasses, or if we are stuck with them. Also by then the price will have come way down, the bugs have been ironed out, and a clear market leader will have emerged.
LED backlighting is available: These TVs are often incorrectly referred to as LED TVs, when actually they are just a normal LCD TV with LED backlighting. The reason this technology has drawn interest is because it rips out the CCFL backlighting that every other LCD TV uses, which can be a little bulky, and it puts in smaller and lighter LEDs instead. The end result is a TV just 2 inches at its thickest point, and it has ultra slim sides once away from the bulk of all the connection ports, but is that worth paying extra for when the current models are pretty slim anyway?
I do think this is a positive step forward, it makes them lighter and thinner, and I will get one at some point, but I don’t think they are worth the massive extra premium they have at the moment while the technology is still new and being hyped up. Have a look in a year or so when the hype has died down, and if they are just 10% more than the non-LED range then they are probably worth getting, otherwise I would stick with a normal one.
Something else we are starting to see is an increase in the size of TVs too, now you can get 46 inch TVs, 50 inch and even 55 inch models. I remember the time when a 32 LCD TV was the main TV for the house! I think that going higher than 42 inches is ok, up to about 46/48 inches, but anything 50 or above is just far too big for most homes.

Those of you who watched The Mentalist last week were introduced to the newest member of the California Bureau of Investigations, Special Agent Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis). Hightower is the new Special Agent in charge of the CBI team and has replace Virgil Minelli (Gregory Itzin) who recently retired from the CBI after losing some of his team during a recent episode involving Red John. Hightower made here presence known and let the entire team know that her number one goal is to improve the reputation of the squad due to the recent issues they have encountered.
The first interaction between Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), we see a look of concern on Lisbon’s face as Jane tries to assure her that the new boss will be fine. During Jane’s time with the CBI he has convinced the team to use some unorthodox methodes to capture their criminals. The methods usually work but are often met with opposition from local law enforcement.
The Red Box storyline was not one of the stronger storylines from this year but the writers of The Mentalist are really good at setting the viewers up for what potentially lies ahead. As each of the team members meet with Hightower throughout the investigation of the murder of James Smithson, we begin to uncover more about Hightower and her motives. When she meets with Lisbon she informs Lisbon that her job to keep Patrick Jane in line. If Lison can’t do it, Hightower will find another agent who can.
We then fast forward to the latter part of the episode where Hightower and Jane have their first official meeting. Here we learn that Hightower is awed with Jane and his ability to close cases. Jane is impervious in the eyes of Special Agent Hightower. Jane does a amazing job in this scene of not showing any of his cards to Hightower or the audience leaving us unsure of where he will go from here with his behavior.
The avid fans of The Mentalist who are active in the blog community know that Teresa Lisbon is not the most loved actress or character on the incredibly successful hit show. Having watched The Mentalist from the beginning, Bruno Heller and John Mankiewicz do a great job dropping subtle hints on the direction they are going to take the show. Are Hightower’s comments throughout this episode just another hint that we might be seeing the end of Teresa Lisbon? The remainder of the season will tell but I have a feeling The Mentalist and the incredible cast and writers will be around for some time to come.
