For medical students the final year of study provides a chance to learn more medicine around the world. The two month work experience period can be taken at home or overseas. However, the majority of students see it as a good chance to travel to developing countries. Getting to know new and different diseases as well as living and working in totally different places is the main reason for such a choice.
Even though they require a lot of effort, medical placements in the developing world will offer any healthcare student invaluable practical experience. Due to the lack of resources in healthcare professionals, medical students will find themselves in situations where they will have to treat patients and practice their knowledge. Under-resourced clinics will give a chance to students to practice the very basics in both diagnosis and treatment which is something they would never have the chance to do back home.
Apart from the great gains of experiencing a medical elective abroad, the unique opportunity of a nursing placement abroad in a resource poor country will always be present. Due to the lack of hospitals, many patients do not manage to request treatment just before they reach a very critical stage of their rapidly advancing pathology or disease. That sort of medical placements are tough and very demanding as most students will have to deal with suffering and dying patients as a result the low financial resources available in those countries.
Many students also find that the reliance of rural patients on traditional cures affects treatment. Mark stayed with a Maasai tribe in South Tanzania. During the 2 months of his elective he spent most of his time with the healers of the village getting to know how they were diagnosing and treating patients. Even though some of those treatments can be helpful, others can have very negative effects. That sort of experience helped explain some of the more unusual symptoms patients were displaying at the clinic.

Many English students want to improve their ESL composition skills. But here is the problem. Most students don’t know how to improve their writing . Some people think good grammar is the same as good writing. Yes, grammar is important. But, grammar is only one skill. Students need six more skills to write good sentences, paragraphs, essays, business reports and even email letters.
To improve English writing abilities, you have to study and practice seven skills . At ESLWRITING.ORG we call these The Seven Writing Rules.
1. Editing
You wrote a story . Are you finished? No. Now you have to edit your writing. To become a better writer, you have to be good at rewriting.
2. Clear Idea
Good writing has an idea. The reader can understand your idea. To write clear ideas you should be able to create two types of sentences: a thesis and a topic sentence.
3. Logical Structure
Writing is like a puzzle. You have to put the pieces together. Good essay skills create logical structure. When someone reads your work, it all seems reasonable . To write logically, you need to have a beginning and end; understand the purpose of a paragraph; and organize a paragraph.
4. Have Style
A writer’s style is like a fingerprint. Everybody has one but they are all different. How can you make your writing more interesting? Find your unique style – or voice – so that the reader knows how you feel about a subject.
5. Word Power
Words are tools. Tools are used to get a job done . Like a carpenter who uses a hammer to build a table. But there are many kinds of hammers. Big and small. Light and heavy.
A good writer chooses the right word for any situation. Words create pictures . To become a better writer, improve your word power with synonyms, antonyms and emotional verbs.
6. Smooth Sentences
Good sentences are like music. Both have a rhythm . They also have a variety of sounds. Good sentences sound smooth and clear when you read them aloud. To become a better writer, you’ll need to be familiar with these concepts: syllables, rhyme, alliteration and variation.
7. Oops.Grammar
Good writers use good basic skills. These are the things like punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar. Yes, grammar is important. Surprise! But, it is not the only skill you need to become a better writer.
