The majority of American students at some time or another will be asked to read and understand the American classic “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Whether they understand it or like it is another story! I remember first reading the book and seeing the movie in the 9th grade, and I just watched the movie again for the second time as an adult so I am giving a quick synopsis.
I thought the story would seem different to me now that I’m older, but much to my surprise it had much the same effect as it did when I was younger and I enjoyed it once again.
The movie is set during the depression in a small Southern town called Maycomb, Alabama. At the time, the South was still deeply divided, very much prejudiced and divided. The story chronicles the lives of a southern family led by Atticus Finch, a lawyer, and his son Jem and daughter Scout. The plot thickens as a white woman accuses a young black man of rape. His subsequent arrest and trial provides the backdrop to the story. The author chooses to show much of the story through a child’s point of view and somehow manages to weave in the tough themes of race, class, and justice.
The story takes its time and progressively builds its substance. It starts out with young Scout reluctantly going off to her first year of school. Her and her brother Jem play and fantasize about going to sneak a peak at the infamous town boogeyman, Boo Radley. One day Jem decides enough is enough and tells Scout he’s going to go take a look for himself.
Meanwhile, Atticus Finch is called to defend the accused rapist Tom Robinson. The kids continue to play in their own world, oblivious the the serious situations around them until things get so hot that they become involved in events beyond their understanding.
The trial begins and the circumstances reveal the towns dark and ugly side. Being an honest and good man, Atticus is forced to fight the odds to defend the truth. Atticus knows that Tom Robinson is innocent and he fights for what is right despite the hostile opposition. Through the most difficult trial of his life, Atticus persists until the very end.
Young Scout sums up one of the main messages of the story by saying, “most people are essentially kind when you really see them.” This story can make you laugh and cry through its ups and downs, twists and turns, and teach you a good lesson all the while. A great classic and an excellent read, the To Kill A Mockingbird book still remains socially relevant as much today as it was in 1960 when the book first came out.

Many people today have a certain prejudice against Christian fiction books. People think that they will be overwhelmed with rebukes and blatant Christian teachings that sometimes they would rather not pick up these kinds of books.

There is no denying that you can find plenty of people who are interested in fiction books, but most of them think twice before picking out a book with a Christian theme, especially if they are not Christians themselves.
